In the past, Chinese people thought women should not enjoy

sex, but this is slowly changing

Li Yinhe, arguably China’s most famous sexologist, says this liberalized attitude towards sex is
being propelled by young, educated women in urban areas.

“We now see more discussions about women’s sexual pleasure,” she tells Inkstone. “In the past,
Chinese people thought women should not enjoy sex, but this is slowly changing.”

Big makers

The country is already the world’s largest producer and exporter of sex toys, manufacturing
around 80% of adult products globally, according to Jason Lau, manager at LoveToy: one of the
few Chinese domestic brands in the industry.

Although the company’s products are still largely exported to Europe and the US, there is now a
growing demand at home. Last year, just under a third of LoveToy’s products were bought by
Chinese customers and those numbers are likely to rise further.

“The longer I’m in this industry, the more I think sex toys should not be stigmatized,” Liu Hanfen,
the founder of LoveToy, says. “It’s like clothing; it’s just another consumer product. There’s
nothing to be ashamed of.”
